In addition to being home to one of Dublin's finest restaurants — Thornton's with acclaimed chef Kevin Thornton — their concierge is considered the most knowledgeable and helpful contact you'll have in Dublin. You can depend on him to secure hard-to get (and sometimes impossible-to-get) tickets, dinner reservations and arranging excellent local activities.

With the Fitzwilliam's superb location and the outstanding service, it is no wonder it was chosen as the winner of the 2009 Georgina Campbell Award for "Best Business Hotel in Dublin."

On my recent trip to Ireland, I spent my first night there. As my long transatlantic flight had arrived around 10 am, they were quick to get me into my room so I could take an early afternoon nap to begin to shake off my jet lag. The linens were sumptuous, and I dreamily settled in under the lightweight duck down duvet with a fresh orchid at my bedside.

The view from my room overlooked St. Stephen's Green, which gave me an opportunity to people watch and enjoy the fall colors in the park as I sipped my tea.

The Fitzwilliam offers a 24-hour gym, but the lure of shopping on Grafton Street won out. After a quick download of my email using their free WiFi service, I set out with my trusty camera to see the sights before meeting friends for dinner in Thornton's.

I toured other rooms in the hotel and particularly liked the king rooms on the back of the hotel with a view of the quiet courtyard and gardens and a balcony. There are only a handful of courtyard balcony rooms, and a good choice if you will be staying at the hotel on a Friday or Saturday night.

Dinner in Thornton's, their Michelin Star restaurant, was beyond fabulous, and the wine selection and service was superb. When I slipped into my turned-down bed, I rested easy knowing my Ireland trip to explore some of its finest 5-star hotels was off to an excellent start.

Luxury at its best in Boston

My recent cruise on Holland America's Maasdam disembarked in Boston, which gave us an opportunity to spend a few days in one of my favorite cities. This was my first time staying at the BOSTON HARBOR HOTEL, chosen because of its close proximity to the cruise port and to the Faneuil Hall Market area. Located across the street from the Financial District, it is also only two blocks from the New England Aquarium, Boston Tea Ship Museum and the historic Freedom Trail.

It was a perfect weekend in a perfect hotel. The service was superior, and the Virtuoso amenity that welcomed us in our rooms was a marvelous treat. I always take advantage of the great fresh seafood when I'm in Boston, and the Meritage Restaurant didn't disappoint us. And the $50 hotel credit (another Virtuoso benefit) was certainly appreciated as we were able to use it toward our dinner bill.

As the Virtuoso complimentary breakfast was able to be used with room service, we indulged with fresh berries, freshly-squeezed orange juice, French toast and warm maple syrup.

Did I say perfect weekend?

Wonders of Ancient Egypt

I've just returned from an amazing two weeks in Egypt and just can't stop telling everyone how they should put Egypt on their 'Must Visit List'!

I accompanied a group who hail from all over the United States -- from Santa Fe to Washington, DC, Florida to New York -- with ages ranging from 50 to 85. The pace of the tour was a good fit for this very diverse group of friends and allowed for each group member to participate in every tour or remain on board the ship for more leisurely activities as they preferred.

A great benefit to a river cruise is that all the shore excursions are included in the price, so you don't have to spend significant amounts of money over and above the cruise cost to see all the sights.

Our tour was the 13-day “Wonders of Ancient Egypt”. This is a moderately-priced trip that provides tremendous value along with excellent accommodations for the pre- and post-cruise portion of the tour, all transfers, most gratuities, Cairo-Luxor-Cairo air, the 7-day cruise with all meals and the services of an Egypt specialist. For 2009, the per person price begins at $1,975 per person! A bonus that remains a highlight of the trip was our outstanding Tour Director, Waleed Allam. By the end of our two weeks together, we all agreed that he must be one of the most knowledgeable Egypt specialist--as well as one of the most gracious and helpful--in all of Egypt!

Our pre-cruise hotel was the Le Meridien, located directly across from the Great Pyramids. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated. We especially enjoyed the Nubian Village restaurant, located on the terrace area by the pool. The weather, atmosphere and food were so good that we dined there both nights. There were many other groups in the hotel at the same time, so the hotel served breakfast in a separate banquet room. The breakfast was a bit of a disappointment, but the lobby cafe made up for it.

Our post-cruise hotel was the Conrad Hilton, located directly on the Nile River and within walking distance of the Egyptian Museum. We enjoyed our dinner at the Citadel Grill in the hotel so much the first night that we returned for dinner on our last evening, followed by drinks and entertainment at Windows of the World at the top of the hotel and overlooking the lights of Cairo.

Our 7-day cruise on the Nile River was spent on the MS Giselle. While the ship is not new, it was very clean and comfortable and the crew provided excellent service. The food was not gourmet, but it was plentiful with lots of fresh vegetables and excellent fish dishes.

In addition to visiting the Valley of the Kings—where the tomb of King Tut was discovered—we visited the Great Pyramids of Giza, the grand Temple of Luxor, the High Dam of Aswan and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, home of all of King Tutankhamun’s priceless and dazzling treasures.

Along with seeing these incredible sights was the opportunity to a ride on a camel and cruise on a felucca (Egyptian sailboat) on the cool breezes along the banks of the Nile.

Note about riding a camel: It is harder than you think. I would not recommend it. I would not do it again. I wouldn’t give anything in the world for the incredible experience!! Now that’s was a true “Bucket List” adventure.

The Other Ireland - Heading North to the Antrim Coast

Ireland is one of my favorite destinations. My annual journey to the Emerald Isle focused on Northern Ireland and its magnificent Antrim Coast.

Our first two nights were spent at the Newforge House, a comfortable Georgian Country House dating from the mid 1700's. Only 30 minutes from Belfast, the home and its beautiful gardens have been in the Mathers family for six generations, and they care for the property with a heartwarming sense of pride. Both breakfast and dinner are served in their beautifully-appointed dining room, and the first-class food is prepared by the owner, a trained chef. He is passionate about providing fresh and flavorful food, taking particular care in purchasing the best local produce to serve their guests.

Our first sight-seeing adventure took us to Bru Na Boinne, a World Heritage Site, about an hour's drive south in County Meath. This is one of the largest and most important prehistoric megalithic sites in Europe, a site often skipped by most tourists. A complex of Neolithic chamber tombs and standing stones date from as early as 3500-3200 BC, it is a worthwhile day trip from either Dublin or Belfast.

Our first hotel site visit was to Ballygally Castle Hotel. The weather was crystal clear and the views were phenomenal. We could see all the way to Scotland! Heading northwest a bit, we visited Ardtara Country House, originally the family home of linen magnate Harry Jackson Clark. The house still bears his influence with the many treasures in the home from his travels to the "New World." Ardtara's warm and friendly staff provide the type of service found in five-star hotels.

The home has nine beautifully-furnished bedrooms, some offering roaring fires and views over the hotel's lush grounds. The dinner menu includes Irish marinated salmon, horseradish cream, chilli and honey vodka.

As we had visited the Giant's Causeway and crossed the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge on a previous trip, we headed straight for Dunluce Castle, the most extensive ruins of a medieval castle in Northern Ireland.

Following a hike around the castle and some strong coffee in the cafe located on the property, we headed for Bushmill's Inn and a well-deserved rest. Bushmills is an excellent base for world-class golf and exploring the Antrim Coast. With their planned expansion, we hope to be able to provide more availability to our clients in the near future. Until their expansion is complete, it is important to book this hotel through me as soon as possible to guarantee space.

Located in the village that is home to the world’s oldest distillery, between the Giant’s Causeway and Royal Portrush Golf Club, this award-winning hotel and restaurant has recreated its origins as an old Coaching Inn and Mill House while providing warm hospitality and roaring fires.

The ferry at McGilligan's Point took us to Donegal, the remote and uncrowded corner of the Republic of Ireland. A golfer's paradise, this area of Ireland is home to some of the world's greatest links courses, and at a fraction of the cost of better known courses in the south. Here you'll find the 2007 Irish Country House of the Year, Rathmullan House. The property's mature trees, lawns and rose gardens open out to a golden beach on the sea at Lough Swilly; and its dining room, The Weeping Elm, serves exceptional food.

Moving on, we visited a hotel in one of the most unique locations on the west coast of Ireland, Rossnowlagh. The Sandhouse Hotel and Spa is situated on a sandy beach famous for surfing and horseback riding. With a pint in hand, you can enjoy the sunset over Donegal on the hotel's private deck. In addition to the advantage of being within a 2 hour drive of one sixth of the greatest Links Golf Courses in the world, you can dine in their award-winning Seashell Restaurant House serving Donegal Bay salmon, sea trout, scallops, crab and lobster, as well as prime beef, lamb, veal and game (in season).

You'll begin your adventure in Dublin at Aberdeen Lodge Hotel and transfer to the ‘Shannon Princess II,’ moored in Killaloe. After a champagne welcome, explore the charming riverside town before dinner on board.

The following day you'll cruise through the fjord-like reaches of the River Shannon onto lovely Lough Derg. At the lake’s widest point, ease westward to a mooring at Mountshannon, perched high above the water. After lunch, visit the Craggaunowen Project, a re-creation of everyday life in the Iron Age and early Christian Ireland.

After a restful night's sleep, cruise to Terryglass, winner of Ireland’s “Tidiest Town.” Have lunch ashore at the quaint Derg Restaurant, followed by an excursion to Leap Castle, Ireland’s most haunted house. Learn the fascinating history of the castle from Sean Ryan and his family who, as they will demonstrate, are also talented traditional musicians.

The next day take an excursion to the lively university town of Galway includes a tour of the famed Irish crystal factory. After lunch at the popular and unique Quays Restaurant, there is time to shop on the way to an overnight mooring at Banagher.

From Banagher you'll travel toward the riverside town of Athlone, stopping en route at the ruins of Clonmacnoise, a famed 6th-century university and early Christian settlement. After a visit to the interpretive center, continue north through Europe’s richest examples of “callows” landscape in one of Ireland’s fi nest wildflower reserves.

On your final full day, cruise north to Lough Ree to explore some of the 365 islands, mooring at pretty Quigley’s Marina on the beautiful “Inner Lakes.” After lunch, a visit to Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre with its excavated bog road made of oak and built in 148 BC. Return to ‘Shannon Princess II’ for a final farewell dinner on board.

After breakfast and you bid a fond farewell to your new friends aboard the Shannon Pricess II, transfer back to Dublin where your tour ends at the Aberdeen Lodge Hotel.

Regent Seven Seas Navigator Group Cruise

On May 24, 2008, a group of 21 people joined me on the Regent Seven Seas Navigator for a 7-day luxury cruise on the Adriatic and Eastern Mediterran Seas.

Before beginning the cruise, we spent 3 days touring Venice, Italy plus took a side trip to Padua, Italy where Gallileo taught, St. Anthony is buried and the most complete and the best preserved collection of works by Giotto is housed.

We then set sail for Istanbul, Turkey stopping in the ports of Dubrovnik, Kotor, Kusadasi (Ephesus), Santorini and Mykonos along the way. Every port was more beautiful than the last, and the weather remained perfect every day.

The most interesting port along the way was Kusadasi (Ephesus) where we visited The House of the Virgin Mary and the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the Basilica of St. John, where the Apostle John is buried.

Our friend, Father Steve Yander, celebrated a private Catholic mass in the chapel next to The House of the Virgin Mary where Pope Benedict XVI recently celebrated mass.

I thought the most beautiful port was Santorini. Regent Seven Seas made a last minute itinerary change so we would be in Santorini on a day when there were not many large ships in port, so the towns weren't as crowded as they often can be. Thank you, Regent Seven Seas for always taking those extra steps to make your guests' cruise experience a little more extraordinary!

Our final destination was Istanbul, Turkey. Wow! Istanbul is an amazing city. We spent 3 post-cruise days there with outstanding private tours each day, excellent food and a whirling dervish show that was held in the terminal where the Orient-Express train leaves for its exclusive journeys to Paris. In addition to the historical and religious sites, we had lots of fun in the Grand Bazaar and in the Spice Market.

Everyone in the group agreed it was one of the best vacations ever.

We often talk about benefits we can provide to our clients at Virtuoso member hotels, but what do these benefits really mean?

Oftentimes, when I tell my clients that they will receive exclusive hotel benefits at Virtuoso member hotels throughout the world that are only available through certified Virtuoso consultants, they don't understand the exact value until I show them specific examples.

Just last week a client wanted to make reservations at Bellagio in Las Vegas over Christmas. If they made their reservation online, with the hotel’s phone reservation service or with Expedia.com, the room would have been $229 per night without any extras. I, on the other hand, reserved the room for $206 per night, plus they will receive an upgrade to a premium room overlooking the pool or fountains on a high floor,* plus they will receive complimentary breakfasts every morning at their choice of five Bellagio restaurants, plus they will receive complimentary passes to the fitness center, plus they will receive a complimentary late check out.

Earlier in the fall a different client wanted to make a reservation for a long weekend at the Greenbriar in West Virginia. For September 14–17, 2007, had they booked online, directly through the hotel or through Expedia, a “Superior” Room, 3 nights/2 adults, would have been Fri. $579; Sat. $579; Sun. $529, for a total of $1,687. Exclusive Ephesus Tour

Not Sleepless in Seattle

With cool temperatures and low humidity, sleeping in a houseboat on Portage Bay, between Lake Washington and Lake Union, is a dream night's rest. I left Atlanta's 95 degree weather and high humidity to visit friends in Seattle on Monday. Seattle is an amazing city with incredible views from almost every vantage point. The sky has been clear, so the locals say, "the mountains are out," including Mt. Rainier, the Olympia mountain range and the Cascades, which are all nearby. Seattle is an easy flight from most major gateways in the U.S. and should be on everyone's Must Visit List.

Elliott Bay on Puget Sound. It is said the Seattle has more boats per capita than anywhere in the world. After touring Seattle, that statistic is believable.

Galapagos Islands Adventure

My adventure to the Galapagos Islands, off the coast of Ecuador, remains the most wondrous trip of all. The small ship carried only 90 passengers, who toured the islands in groups of 14 so that no more than 20 to 30 people were ever on an island at one time (very strict environmental laws to protect the islands and animals).

We were transported from ship to shore on Zodiacs escorted by certified naturalists who educated us on the many species, history, science and environmental aspects of each of our two daily island excursions. Our group — named the Cormorants — was made up of individuals from six different countries, and we all became fast friends.

Until actually visiting the islands, it was hard to comprehend what it would be like to step around hundreds of giant iguanas to get down a path or come within a few feet of sea lions and their pups or inches from thousands of Sally Lightfoot crabs or witness the dance of mating albatrosses. It is impossible to fully describe the wonders of the islands and its animals. The Galapagos Islands should be a must-do trip for anyone looking to wander off the beaten path.
